Bemidji Pioneer - 5/27/2022

May 27—ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs recently awarded $93,767 to the

Leech Lake Nation

as part of the Support Our Troops license plate fund grant program.

Leech Lake's Homeless Veteran Financial Assistance Program was specifically recognized for providing financial assistance to at least 50 eligible participants within the tribal nation.

The grant program offers a competitive grant process that allows organizations to apply for funding. According to a release, grants ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 focus on supporting and improving the lives of veterans and their families.

Other grant recipients include LegalCorps, American Heroes Outdoors, Prairie Five Community Action Council, Mandatory Fun Outdoors and Conservation Corps Minnesota and Iowa.

"Congratulations to our diverse group of grant recipients for their commitment to serving Minnesota veterans in many different ways," MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke said in a release. "I also thank those Minnesotans who purchase SOT license plates. Without support from the thousands who are driving home their support every day, these grants would not be possible."

The SOT License Plate Program assists Minnesota military, veterans and families by providing these grants as well as emergency financial assistance, homeless intervention, access to earned veteran benefits, family counseling and community seminars on military-specific health conditions.

SOT license plates can be purchased at any local DMV office.
