El Paso VA expands COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to include veterans' spouses, caregivers

El Paso Times - 4/8/2021

All veterans, their spouses and caregivers now are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the El Paso VA, officials said.

Also, people who are part of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs also qualify to receive the vaccine at the El Paso VA.

The program is for surviving spouses or children of veterans with disabilities or veterans who died and who don’t qualify for TRICARE.

The VA will continue to prioritize vaccinations for veterans enrolled in VA care and vaccinate others when COVID-19 vaccine doses are more readily available, officials said.

“Community immunity is the goal integral to us fighting this pandemic,” El Paso VA Medical Center Director Mike Amaral said in a statement. “Having the ability to vaccinate the spouses of our veterans brings us one person closer to that goal. We strongly encourage eligible non-Veteran spouses who are caregivers, to pre-register for the vaccine. Failure to do so will lead to longer than necessary wait times once you arrive at the clinic.”

Veterans can register for the vaccine by calling 915-564-6100 and selecting option 2.

The VA has given at least one shot of the vaccine to more than 9,500 veterans across far West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.
