"DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To prevent children and adults with cognitive disabilities who use wheelchairs from unlocking a wheelchair seat belt. To make this cover, lay the material on flat surface with back facing up. Using straight pins, pin the edges together lengthwise along the material. With a sewing machine or needle, stitch along the pinned edge line lengthwise. Turn material right side out and slip onto one end of wheelchair seat belt. Fasten the belt and slide material over fastener. Scrunch the material up to make it harder to access the button on the belt. To open the belt, push the cover to one side. The cover is inexpensive to make, enabling the user to have one in several different colors to coordinate with clothing. DIMENSIONS (LxW): The material for the standard cover should be 36 x 7 inches. The size of material can be altered to fit any size belt or fasteners . Measure the width of the belt, multiply by two, and add 2.5 inches for roominess and hemming. MATERIALS: One piece of soft flannel material, thread to match material, and straight pins. TOOLS: Sewing machine or sewing needle. SKILLS REQUIRED: Sewing. TITLE: Wheel Chair Seat Belt Adaptation.
