COVID-19 cases increase for fourth consecutive week in Schuylkill County

Republican Herald - 8/20/2022

Aug. 20—For the fourth consecutive week, cases of COVID-19 have increased in Schuylkill County.

As of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, the state Department of Health reported 264 cases, up from 242 at the same time last week.

The number of cases have risen each week since July 19, when there were 174 cases reported.

Although the Centers for Disease Control relaxed guidelines on social distancing and quarantining on Aug. 11, they recommend masks in areas where community transmission is deemed high.

The county is currently rated as having a medium community transmission level by the CDC. At this level, the CDC recommends those at risk of severe illness to talk to their healthcare provider about wearing a mask and taking other precautions. Others should stay up to date with vaccinations and get tested if symptoms develop.

By the numbers

Since the coronavirus pandemic started in March 2020, there have been 37,773 cases in the county.

Three new deaths were recorded, up from two last week, bringing that total to 706.

Hospitalizations have also gone up, with seven people in the hospital as of Thursday, compared to two last week. No one was on a ventilator or in an intensive care unit.
